  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup plain flour
  • salt flakes & freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 frenched lamb shanks
  • 2 onions
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 3 carrots
  • 1 L chicken stock
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 150mL Bulla Cooking Cream
  • to serve
  • Bulla Crème Fraîche
  • couscous, green beans, coriander, flaked almonds

Slow Cooked Spiced Lamb Shanks


  1. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan. Place flour and seasonings in a plastic bag, add lamb shanks and shake to coat. Add lamb shanks to hot pan and sear until golden brown. Remove and place in the bowl of a slow cooker.
  2. Add remaining oil to pan, cook onion and garlic until tender. Stir in spices and cook until fragrant. Add tomato paste and cook for a further minute. Spoon mixture into slow cooker with carrots, stock, honey and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  3. When meat is falling off the bone, stir in Bulla Cooking Cream and cook for a further 5 minutes.
  4. To serve, plate lamb shank and drizzle with sauce. Accompany with couscous, green beans and finish with a dollop of Bulla Crème Fraîche, some almonds and coriander.
